Setting the New Standard: NextPM Achieves Class 1 Certification for Fine Particle Monitoring in South Korea

Class 1 certification is a legal requirement in South Korea for fine particle measurement instruments used for air quality monitoring purposes.

The Korean government has put in place a strict regulatory framework for fine particle monitoring, partly motivated by the enactment of the Special Act on the Reduction and Management of Fine Dust. This law aims to mitigate the risks that fine particles pose to public health.

The Class 1 certification obtained by NextPM means that it can now be used as a reference instrument for the evaluation of other fine particle sensors in South Korea. This is particularly significant given South Korea’s emphasis on the accurate monitoring of fine particulate matter, as outlined in the Special Act on the Reduction and Management of Fine Particulate Matter.

NextPM is designed to operate in a wide range of environmental conditions, and offers particle size detection in the 0.3 to 10 µm diameter range.

The key technical features of NextPM are outlined below:

● Two-angle detection: The NextPM incorporates two photodetectors that measure light scattering at two angles (45° and 90°) for greater accuracy. This unique feature enables better discrimination of particles from 1 to 10 µm.

● Humidity regulation: The NextPM uses a heating system at the sensor inlet to keep the relative humidity inside the sensor below 60%. This patented innovation limits the influence of humidity on measurements and extends sensor life.

● Anti-clogging design: The NextPM features an integrated aeraulic filter at the sensor inlet. This filter prevents particles larger than 10 µm in aerodynamic diameter from entering the regular flow, and directs them to a high-capacity retention tank. This unique design eliminates the need for an additional physical filter, and improves sensor life by preventing premature clogging.

NextPM’s Class 1 certification is a significant development in the field of fine particle monitoring in South Korea. It provides a reliable and accurate instrument for measuring fine particle concentrations, contributing to the country’s efforts to manage and reduce fine particle pollution. The sensor’s technical features, especially humidity regulation and anti clogging design, make it a valuable tool for air quality monitoring in the challenging environmental conditions often experienced in South Korea

In conclusion, NextPM sensor, with its Class 1 certification and high accuracy score, is set to become a key instrument in South Korea’s fine particle monitoring and management efforts.

NextPM 1046 New Features

In our continuous efforts to improve our sensors’ performances and thanks to your feedback, we have integrated new features in the latest version of NextPM.

***Of course any dev. made for previous NextPM is fully compatible with newer version, we added new registers, none have been modified or deleted***

Please find below the details of these new features:

New registers

  • 5 bins from 0.3 to 10µm in number of particle per liter:

New modbus registers added to provide the particle size distribution on the whole range of measurement of the NextPM with 5 individual bins: 0.3 – 0.5 µm ; 0.5 – 1 µm ; 1 – 2.5 µm ; 2.5 – 5 µm ; 5 – 10 µm. This provides our users the possibility to create their own particle detection algorithms for example (to train AI in order to create particle signatures and behavioral patterns).

  • Total Suspended Particles (TSP) added to the modbus register:

With an extra bin providing estimated concentrations for TSP (up to 50 µm) in µg/m3. NextPM native aerolic filter stops particles with an aerodynamic diameter exceeding 10 µm at the inlet. This prevents sensors’ clogging and allows a more accurate measurement of PM10 (as particles of a bigger diameter are blocked at the inlet). To be in line with specific regulation, such as for the Asian market, we have developed a deterministic algorithm that estimates PM concentrations above 10µm, up to 50µm. As particle pollution is related to seasons and locations, it may need adjustments depending where you intend to use the sensor. Do not hesitate to contact us to ensure optimized values for TSP.

Humidity management

  • Improvement of the temperature and relative humidity measures with and without heating system:

As the temperature and humidity probes are located inside NextPM, when the heating system was activated, the accuracy of these measurements was impacted thus providing less reliable data. With the new version we have modeled the impact of the heating on the temperature probe to dynamically correct the output temperature data and make it more reliable, whether the heating is on or off.

  • Modification of the behavior of the heating system, with automatic regulation shifting from 0% up to 100% if relative humidity exceeds 65%:

A key feature of NextPM is its ability to remove humidity from particles, thus providing accurate measurement even above 65% of humidity. In the previous NextPM version a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) was implemented to progressively activate internal heaters based on the percentage of humidity. While being a positive thing regarding energy consumption, experience has proven that this strategy took more time to reach its full capacity to remove humidity. In the new version of NextPM, when 65 % of humidity is reached, heaters are turned on at their full intensity to accelerate humidity removal in order to provide accurate measurements even in fast changing environmental conditions.

Thank you again NextPM community for your feedback and improvement ideas. Our amazing team is working hard to meet these new technical and scientific challenges and continue to improve the accuracy of our sensors.

As always, should you have any question regarding this new version or any other topic, do not hesitate to reach out to our technical department, we will be happy to provide details and assistance. And if you have any specific requirements, please come back to us to suggest it, and it may be part of the next firmware.

NextPM VS the competition: dynamic spider chart

After our recent post about NextPM being the best Particulate Matter sensor on the market we had quite a few emails asking for technical / scientific information that would back up that claim.
There are of course many aspects to take into account to evaluate which is the best PM sensor: accuracy, price, drift, reproducibility, size… and the choice will directly depend on your specific application.
Beyond NextPM key features (such as humidity shield to prevent growth factor effect), we focused on creating a balanced sensor that not only provides accurate data on all PM sizes but also reliable in time and afordable.
This is the problem with Alphasense R2 that is more accurate than NextPM on PM10 but less on PM2.5 and 1 and rapidly drifts. It is therefore not only more costly to buy but also to operate.
To create this comparison chart we used data open to the public published on AQ SPEC by AQMD. It is an amazing source of high quality data based on lab. and field testing of the major sensor brands on the market.
These data were normalized to be displayed on a common graph.
